Academic Programmes
There is one pre school class for learners who have never been to school. Many of the learners from the rural, previously disadvantaged communities, attend this class before they start with more formal classes.
From grade 1 to grade 9 learners follow the same academic curriculum as learners in the provincial main stream schools. A learner with special educational needs can therefore easily transfer between schools if the need arises. The teachers are all very trained and more than 90% of them have post graduate qualifications in remedial teaching.
After grade 9 learners follow a two year course resulting in a National Senior Certificate, majoring in Business studies. The school acts as a satellite campus for the local Technical College. The learners write the same exams and receive the same certificates as the college students.
Skills training are available for learners who are not able to follow the academic courses.
There is good contact between the parents and the school and parents get regular reports on the learners' progress. The staff also assists the parents and learners with the planning of their futures. They are brought into contact with representatives of the Department of manpower, who assist them with counseling, job application and bursaries for further study.
Some learners need to go to care facilities after completion of their school programmes. Parents and social and community workers are assisted by the school to find the most suitable placement for the children.
Sport programmes:
Learners take part in a variety of sports: swimming, field and track athletics, table tennis, tennis, netball and football. They participate on an inter school, inter provincial and national level. Some of the learners have represented South Africa at international sports meetings for the physically challenged.
Cultural activities:
These include singing, revue, drama and art. The activities provide a healthy outlet for many frustrations, and also provide much fun and joy.
Tours and excursions:
Groups of learners regularly go on educational and recreational excursions, ranging from day trips to the zoo, aquarium and planetarium, to week trips to the Kruger National Park. The National Parks Board and the Rotarians are sponsoring the latter.
